Question of the Day: How To Deal With My Friend’s Horrible Girlfriend?

June 18, 2008

Dr. Emma: My friend's girlfriend sucks. I try to be nice and supportive of him and their relationship, but she doesn't make it easy. She has a sour disposition toward all his friends, but is, of course, as sweet as apple pie with him. How can I keep hanging out with them without wanting to punch her in the face?

Wow, sounds like someone has some anger issues! Maybe instead of focusing all that hostility toward your friend's girlfriend, you should take a hard look at yourself. Contemplating physical violence is not exactly the same as being “nice and supportive.” Has it occurred to you that maybe you're the one with the sour disposition?

Face facts: you don't get a vote in whom your friend chooses to date. If it’s Real Love, you’re going to have to come to terms with her sooner or later, or else say goodbye to the friendship. My advice: unclench your fists and just try to be happy for your friend. If that doesn't help you make peace, then maybe you need to take up boxing.
