Question of the Day: What to Do With a "Fixer-Upper"

June 2, 2008

Dr. Emma: I've been dating this guy for a little over a year. When I met him, he was working in a coffee shop and didn't have much ambition. Since we've been together, he finally got a respectable job, but I still don't get the feeling he's serious about building a career. Any advice?

Ah, the old "fixer-upper." He's "a diamond in the rough." He has such "potential." And all he needs is a little "direction."

When you need to use "air quotes" to describe your mate, your relationship is nothing but a punchline. This guy is not a partner; he's a project. And take it from me: if you spend all your time and energy on a fixer-upper, you'll never have a penthouse. Upgrade.

My ex was a total fixer-upper. Never did fix him though! Glad to be rid of him.

OMG, thank you for answering my question, Dr. Emma! My next guy will be less rough and more diamond!
