You Can’t Buy Self-Esteem

June 27, 2008

I was surprised to hear recently that a friend of mine is seriously considering plastic surgery. I was even more surprised to hear that it was her husband's suggestion. Previously, I'd always thought of her as a strong, successful woman, but clearly there are some self-esteem issues if she's so willing to try to become the perfect “trophy wife.”

Question of the Day: What to Do With a "Fixer-Upper"

June 2, 2008

Dr. Emma: I've been dating this guy for a little over a year. When I met him, he was working in a coffee shop and didn't have much ambition. Since we've been together, he finally got a respectable job, but I still don't get the feeling he's serious about building a career. Any advice?

Ah, the old "fixer-upper." He's "a diamond in the rough." He has such "potential." And all he needs is a little "direction."

Not My Reality

May 30, 2008

I am by no means a fan of so-called reality television, but on occasion even I stumble across these shows, and I couldn't be more horrified when I do. All these women degrading themselves in every way imaginable for a chance to become some non-celebrity's chosen slut du jour.

I can't imagine what would cause someone to go on TV, drink to excess, make out with total strangers, and completely humiliate themselves in the name of "love." That's SO not how you achieve success.
